Born Nimrata Randhawa in Bamberg, South Carolina on January 20, 1972, to an Indian-American family, she was raised by her parents, Ajit Singh, and his wife, Raj Kaur Randhawa, who emigrated from Punjab, United States. Growing up was not all rosy for Nikki who was discriminated against because of her skin color. She started working in her mother’s clothing line called Exotica International when she was 12 years old. She completed her basic education at Orangeburg Preparatory Schools in Orangeburg, South Carolina in 1989 and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Clemson University.

After graduating, Nikki joined a waste disposal and recycling company called FCR Corporation where she worked for a few years. When she left FCR Corporation, she returned to manage her family’s fashion business. As CFO, Nikki helped the company achieve greater heights. Following her success in the business, she was appointed to the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in 1998.

Nikki joined the board of directors of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce in 2003 and also became the treasurer of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) the same year. While there, she served as president of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation, Medical Foundation, and West Metro Republican Women. She later served as president of the South Carolina chapter of the NAWBO and the Friends Leadership Scouting Campaign in 2006.

His political career

Nikki Haley played for South Carolina House Representatives from Lexington County District 87 and defeated incumbent Rep. Larry Koon to win the job. After two years of successful representation, she retained her position for a second term in 2006 and a third in 2008. She declared her consent to run for Governor of South Carolina in May 2009 and was endorsed incumbent governor of South Carolina and fellow Republican candidate Mark Sanford and his wife Jenny Sanford; as well as Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

In the 2010 gubernatorial election, NikkiDemocrat Vincent Sheheen became the Governor of South Carolina. She became the third foreigner to be elected governor of a southern state after Douglas Wilder of Virginia and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. She was then re-elected for a second term in November 2014. Her term will expire in January 2019, but she resigned in January 2017 to assume her new role as US Ambassador to the United Nations.

Although she is not a fan of Trump, Nikki said she would vote for him in the 2016 election. .
