John Legend Shares Thoughts On Felicity Huffmans 14 Day Prison Sentence

Publish date: 2024-05-09

John Legend is sharing his thoughts on Felicity Huffman’s 14-day prison sentence. The singer is criticizing the final verdict involving the actress, as well as the legal system in general.

Along with her two-week stint in prison, Huffman has been ordered to pay a $30,000 fine and complete 250 hours of community service.

The father of two is an advocate for criminal justice reform. He launched FREEAMERICA in 2014 to help “transform America’s criminal justice system.”

Most recently Legend was featured on an MSNBC town hall about criminal justice with NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt. The town hall gained the attention of President Trump starting a Twitter feud between him, Legend and Chrissy Teigen.

Once news of Huffman’s sentencing broke, social media erupted calling her sentence nothing but white, wealthy privilege. Legend offered another view on the hot topic as the outrage began to take over Twitter.

“I get why everyone gets mad when rich person X gets a short sentence, and poor person of color Y gets a long one. The answer isn’t for X to get more; it’s for both of them to get less (or even none!!!) We should level down not up,” The Voice judge said in the first of several Tweets.

Legend never mentions Huffman’s name or the college admissions scandal in his messages, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what started his messages.

“Americans have become desensitized to how much we lock people up. Prisons and jails are not the answer to every bad thing everyone does, but we’ve come to use them to address nearly every societal ill,” Teigen’s husband continued to share his words.

The 40-year-old went on to use two recent cases as examples to support his thoughts. One has been cited a lot throughout the college admissions scandal. An Ohio woman of color was sentenced to five years in prison for falsely enrolling her children in a better school district than the one they should have attended.

John Legend has thoughts on Felicity Huffman’s prison sentence. It is his last Tweet that is gaining the most attention.

“And no one in our nation will benefit from the 14 days an actress will serve for cheating in college admissions. We don’t need to lock people up for any of this stuff,” the singer stated.

He wants people to realize it is ok to be mad but make sure you are mad at the right thing. What do you think about Legend’s remarks?
